News flash: President Obama last week signed an historic document establishing the first National Ocean Policy. Our little but mighty state of Rhode Island is a leader in "ecosystem-based management." This includes looking at our marine environment in a holistic fashion. The new policy will educate our citizenry about the connectedness of sea life, clean and safe water, our shorelines and responsible coastal development. Ultimately, Priscilla Brooks of the Conservation Law Foundation, a regional environmental advocacy group has stated that " our government has has said it will be the policy of the United States to manage the health, sustainability and biological diversity of the oceans." This is landmark legislation for environmental advocacy. We all have a stake in the future of our oceans and the environment.
